my university has a high geek component (the question is: was it the faculty or the students?)
Spotted in Newcomb Hall (where most of the language classes take place; I've also had both my classical studies classes there): Poster declaring "Want to be a space cowboy? Take Chinese next semester!" over the Serenity poster.

I shall endeavour to take a crappy cellphone pic of it tomorrow.

But where were the Chinese people on that show, if their culture became so influential? That's what I want to know.

It's just so surprising - I hadn't even noticed the literal marginalization - not just an absence but the characters that are asian hold marginalized places in society. Which was totally weird, considering how they seemed to portray asian aesthetics and culture as a higher-class thing (or maybe just a companion thing?)

Well, there are no characters that are Asian -- I think the only actual Asian characters are in "Heart of Gold"? And the rest of the time they're just...not there. *frowns* The comments on that LJ entry, for the vid, are fairly interesting too.
